NIRI USA Begins Its Journey to Support Research collaboration and Mentorship

NIRI USA, a U.S.-based partner of the Nexus Institute of Research and Innovation (NIRI) Nepal, officially launched on March 1, 2025, in a virtual event that brought together a diverse global audience. The event, streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live, attracted over 100 participants at its peak, primarily from the Nepalese diaspora worldwide.

 

The inauguration was hosted by Dr. Ritu Pokharel, Secretary of NIRI USA. The program commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Rajendra Pangeni, Founder and Chairman of NIRI Nepal, who reflected on the organization's inception during the pandemic. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of Nepali-origin researchers worldwide in establishing NIRI as a platform for scientific advancement.

 

Dr. Saroj Sah, Chairperson of NIRI USA and a Plant Biologist, shared his personal journey from Sarlahi, Nepal, to his current role in the U.S. He emphasized NIRI USA’s mission to serve as a mentorship hub for young researchers while supporting groundbreaking scientific research in Nepal. Also, Bishu Joshi, a member of the NIRI USA and a Biomaterial Scientist at Gel4med Inc., shared his journey with how it is connected to NIRI and NIRI USA. Dr. Ritu Pokharel,

 

Secretary, also shared her personal journey how NIRI helped her to achieve her career goal and that’s why she connects to NIRI USA. 

 

Distinguished guest speakers, including Dr. Damoder Poudel and Rishi Dhakal, Honorary Consulate Generals of Ohio and California,

 

respectively, extended their congratulations and pledged their support for NIRI USA’s initiatives. They underscored the significance of fostering collaboration between Nepalese scientists and global research communities.

 

Young leaders of Nepali origin, such as Nima Sherpa, Prashamsha Ghimire, and Yaman Thapa, shared insights on the evolving role of Nepalese youth in global innovation. They expressed their hopes for NIRI USA to become a transformative platform for mentorship and professional development.

 

The event concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Tara Sigdel of the University of California, San Francisco.

 

Drawing parallels to prestigious research institutions like Scripps Research and the Broad Institute, he envisioned a future where NIRI USA employs hundreds of researchers, making significant contributions to interdisciplinary sciences in Nepal.

 

Following the formal session, attendees engaged in discussions about collaborative research opportunities and networking prospects within NIRI USA. The launch marked the beginning of a committed effort to bridge research gaps and advance scientific collaboration between Nepal and the global scientific community.

With its ambitious vision and strong support network, NIRI USA embarks on a journey to empower researchers, foster innovation, and drive impactful scientific progress in Nepal and beyond.
